Marcus Hiles - Environmental Impact

Marcus Hiles, founder and CEO of Western Rim Properties, a multi-billion-dollar real estate company, emphasizes the importance of maintaining and increasing the impact of the environment and surrounding natural atmosphere within his developments. While on one hand this helps to beautify the luxury housing and apartment estates that he builds, Hiles also stresses the importance of balance within the environment itself.

Marcus Hiles
Regarding the role of the environment in his development plans, Hiles states “Trees and vegetation play a key role in every Western Rim development […] This strategy extends beyond improving air quality and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. These plants can also minimize pollutants in storm water and reduce overall neighborhood noise. One healthy tree is equal to 10 standard room-sized air conditioners running up to 20 hours a day. Our trees provide much needed shade from the Texas heat and can help our renters reduce cooling needs by up to 30%.” While the aesthetics of the estates’ surroundings are important, so too is the need for energy conservation.

Aside from his own properties, Hiles also purchases and plants 2,500 trees every year to refurbish the environmental landscape; he has been responsible for the plantings of over 30,000 trees in the past decade. Hiles takes into account his company’s carbon footprint with each development project he begins.

Miles. Hiles sums up the importance of environment in his company’s plans by saying, “My goal is to continue increasing the tree canopy in all of our neighborhoods as well as create municipal parks, jogging trails, and reserves. Our commitment to proven ecological solutions grants our renters the optimal quality of life in a thriving community.”

During Hiles’ youth, good work ethics and a hardworking attitude were the two main components of his personal education, both of which he applied to his academic education. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree from Rice University, Hiles moved onto a rigorous graduate school program at Pepperdine. Here, he learned the essential elements of creating, developing, and managing his own real estate business. Pepperdine offered him multiple opportunities through service leadership projects, nonprofit leadership collaborative, club activities, and scholarships, to hone the skills he would eventually use to create Western Rim Properties, a multi-billion-dollar company.

From this point, the future founder of Western Rim Properties refined his business skills, and began to work with various high-level real estate developers and investors to learn about the heart of the industry. At the age of 28, Marcus Hiles started his company, with a unique approach to providing well-appointed homes and apartments at economical prices for middle class families, including close proximity to necessary amenities and cities. Hiles cites his education as an important factor in helping him design the future direction of his company. The value of the education Hiles received from

Pepperdine was clearly evident when Miles Hiles funded the creation of a job placement and career services program at Seaver College at Pepperdine as a way of giving back to the school that gave him a start.

Marcus Hiles - Wine and Collecting

Aside from creating and constructing some of the most innovative real estate developments in Texas, Marcus Hiles, founder and CEO of Western Rim Properties, has another main passion: wine. When building his house just outside of Colleyville, Texas, Hiles had a unique wine cellar built complete with an underground stream. The stream helps keep the cellar at the perfect atmospheric temperature for the preservation of his vintage wine collection, estimated at an approximate value of $15 million dollars.
Marcus Hiles
The Marcus Hiles collection is renowned for its spectacular Bodeaux and Burgandy Chateaux selections. In 2010, a portion of Hiles’ collection --- 6,500 bottles --- was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong for a total of $7.7 million. Included in the sale was the collection of 1,030 bottles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti valued at $1.8 million alone, making it the biggest collection of this wine ever offered by Sotheby’s Asia. Hiles’ superb taste in wine drew the commendation and approval of Serena Sutcliffe, Worldwide Head of Sotheby’s Wine Department. The majority of the sale’s proceeds went to construct computer labs and fund afterschool programs for inner-city children.

Hiles is famous for buying wine upon its initial release, before the wines were made available to general consumers, and preserving it in his temperature-controlled cellar. These rare bottles of wine run upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars each.

Best known as a successful real estate mogul, Marcus Hiles has also funneled his skills and abilities into amassing an incredible collection of rare, vintage wines that is unparalleled.
